BRACE  NEWSLETTER

Seniors and Juniors!  My name is Ms. Charlotte Kaplan and I am the BRACE Advisor here at JPT.  The term BRACE stands for Broward Advisor for Continuing Education. I’m here to help you with some of the important decisions that need to be made this year.  The BRACE office has information on 4 year colleges (in or out of state), 2 year colleges (in or out of state), vocational-technical schools, military programs and apprenticeship opportunities.  If continuing your education beyond graduation is in your plans, then you need to make an appointment with me.  The BRACE office is located in the guidance department and my office hours are 7:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. every day.

There will be many events and lots of information pertaining to seniors and juniors.  You will need to pay particular attention to JPTV live for scholarship information, college/vocational school visitations and other important happenings this year. Also, please watch for the same listings on the BRACE Bulletin Board in the BRACE office. Things to watch for include Scholarship Bulletins posted in the front of the BRACE office, Open Houses, and lists of colleges/universities coming to JPT.

Best of luck to all of you this year.  Keep those grades up---I want to see every senior walk across that stage in June.  Please feel free to come and see me.

COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

If you are applying to any of the State universities, pick up a transcript request form in the Guidance office. Each electronic request is $1.00. If you are applying to out of state colleges and/or private Florida institutions , each transcript that must be sent out by the school is $2.00. Many applications for out of state colleges or universities and private Florida institutions are available through the BRACE office as well.  If you are interested in an out of state school, you should be contacting them for your application, financial aid information and a catalog.

CSS/FINANCIAL AID PROFILE FORM

 If you are applying to certain select schools and are applying for financial aid, you will be required to fill out a PROFILE form.  This is a separate form in addition to a Federal Financial Aid Form.  The PROFILE is to be filled out in the fall and will be available in the BRACE office. Most of the schools prefer you fill out this form on-line

COMPUTER PROGRAMS

 There are several computer programs available for those students who need assistance in finding a college/university, vocation or technical school, career or scholarship.  These programs take anywhere from 15 – 45 minutes to complete and are located just outside the BRACE office and the Media Center.  Please ask for assistance.

 **SCHOLARSHIP BULLETINS**

 Scholarship Bulletins will be posted in the BRACE office. In addition, every guidance counselor has a Scholarship Bulletin and they are in all the senior English classes.  These bulletins list all the recent scholarships that have come in, qualifications of applicants, how much the scholarship is for and the application deadline. Remember – IT IS UP TO YOU TO SEEK THESE OUT.  Many scholarships went unapplied for last year.  You may be the only interested applicant and consequently, the scholarship winner.  APPLY!!

 **TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS**

 There are 2 different types of transcript requests.  If you are requesting a transcript for a College/University or any other post-secondary school, you MUST fill out a transcript request form (they are on the wall by the registrar). You MUST pay either $1.00 or $2.00 per transcript, depending on the type of school you are applying to.  Once paid, the Registrar will then send out your transcript to the schools you have indicated.  If you are applying for a scholarship and need a transcript, you must fill out a the same transcript request form just indicate “FOR SCHOLARSHIPS” on the  top and write down the name of the scholarship.  You must bring this form to Ms. Kaplan in the BRACE office. There is NO CHARGE for a transcript for a scholarship application.

 ** PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE IS A 2-3 DAY TURN AROUND FOR ALL TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS—PLEASE JUDGE ACCORDINGLY**
